What Michigan requires — before you file

6-month residency, 10-day county. You must have lived in Michigan for at least 6 months and in the county where you file for at least 10 days.

60-day waiting period (no children) / 180-day (with children). Michigan imposes a 60-day waiting period for divorces without minor children and 180 days when minor children are involved.

Financial disclosure required. Both parties must exchange financial information.
Michigan uses 'legal custody' and 'physical custody.' The Friend of the Court is a unique Michigan agency that assists the court in custody, parenting time, and support matters.
